Intellectual disability is characterized by intellectual functioning and adaptive behavioral limitations.
Referring to learning, reasoning, problem-solving, social, conceptional, and practical skills, individuals who are diagnosed with an intellectual disability often lead very difficult lives in normal, everyday settings. They’re limited to cultivating appropriate, social relationships and unable to achieve personal independence, which is where The Brambles come in.
We offer more than just a facility for individuals with intellectual disabilities, rather a home with warm and loving staff members who care about the residents. Not only do we provide expert care, but we also enable the residents to carry on seemingly normal lives where they have freedom and autonomy to live the highest quality of life possible.
The Brambles offers programs for individuals with a range of intellectual disabilities, including:
- Down Syndrome
- Cerebral Palsy
- Fragile X Syndrome (FXS)
- Among many others
We also encourage you to learn more about our services for individuals with coexisting physical and intellectual disabilities.

Intellectual Disability Services & Day Support Center
At The Brambles, we believe in having fun and exploring the creativity of each resident, which is where our Day Support Center offers the right amount of relaxation and enjoyment to accompany our intellectual disability services.
Located in the heart of Mathews, our Day Support Center has been in operation since 2004, serving Brambles residents and adults from Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula counties.
Our newly-expanded Day Support Center offers two activity rooms for extramural activities such as arts and crafts and playing games, shower/bathing facilities, a fully equipped kitchen, and a fenced courtyard for outdoor activities.
We believe in providing quality individual attention in order to make our residents and attending adults feel cared for, which is why we maintain a staff to client care ratio of 1:3.
As part of our intellectual disability services, we also offer transport to and from the Day Support Center. Our fleet of handicap vans provide the safest means of transportation from The Brambles group homes to the Day Support Center, medical appointments, local entertainment events, or shopping excursions.
In addition, we offer transportation for local families whose loved one resides at home but would like to attend the Day Support Center. At The Brambles, we believe in going above and beyond to accommodate our residents and their families.

Family & Community
The Brambles is a family owned and operated intellectual disability facility where we believe that treating each resident as an extension of our family is as important as family itself.
We encourage individuals to lead socially and physically active lifestyles. Supervised by our experienced staff, residents make meals in the kitchen, help feed and care for pets, gather for games, crafts and more.
The Brambles regularly organizes activities such as volunteering at the local animal shelter, ice-cream socials, karaoke, trips to the beach, bowling, and many more, depending on the season and interest shown from our residents.
